Jack Berry, renowned sports writer talks about fellow Michigan Golf Hall of Fame member Glenn Johnson who passed away recently and was an important mentor and friend of Emily’s, as he was to many. That was confidence and that was Glenn Johnson. “I had fun with the clothes. I hated to play (after a morning round) without cleaning up,” Johnson said. “One time a guy asked me why I was always changing colors, why I didn’t wear black or white. Sandra McNeil, WWJ-950 AM CBS Detroit talks story about the welcome for Jim Harbaugh as the new University of Michigan Football Coach. Jim’s dad was a U of M Asst’ Coach and Jim the U of M Quarterback in mid 80’s. A Detroit Red Wing fan, Sandra talks about the new Red Wings stadium, residential and retail complex Mike Ilitch, owner of Little Caesars, Detroit Red Wings and Detroit Tigers is developing and some of the pros and cons of the project expressed by public. They talk about their experiences at Slow Roll Detroit and more Emily talks about some Big Island of Hawaii events including PGA Champions Tour Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai coming up January 21-25.

Kathleen Johnson, Kona Hiking Club has info on the New Years Day Potluck at 10am open to everyone at Old Kona Airport Park, Pavilion #1. if you just want to know more about the hikes that usually are the third Saturday of each month or find out who goes on the hikes. I do. I like that the pace suits all levels of walkers and hikers. On New Years day there will be a optional beach wander at 9am before the potluck to Pawai Bay or Kailua Bay. Winona Chen, Kona Beach & Sports team member and I walk and talk while in the store which Grant Miller started as Hawaiian Pedals in 1989 with nothing but a dozen rental bikes in the Kona Inn Shopping Village (on Ali Drive oceanside in Kailua Village). I love showcasing small entrepreneurs and saying nice things about Kailua Village. Winona shares some good info about what they carry ... the clothing, accessories, footwear for hiking, the beach, running, walking, great tasting snacks that do you good too. I bought my first mountain bike from Grant way back when. They still rent bikes...lots of them. It's a go to place for locals and visitors .. for me, they help recreation fun with the right equipment to fit my budget. Winona and Kona Beach & Sports will be hosting another of the very popular complimentary triathlon training day in February at Anaehoomalu Bay at Waikoloa Beach Resort. We share stories about the wave of enthusiasm in Detroit for recreation, farmers markets, community gardens, urban life style and commuting by bikes and on foot. Globetrotters are in Detroit this week. Bull Bullard, who grew up in Detroit and is a member of the Harlem Globetrotters had nice things to say about Detroit last year when he was on the Big Island of Hawaii and we had a chance to talk story. It was his foster mom in Detroit who encouraged him to play basketball to keep him out of trouble. Bull, who played for Texas A & M is a fan favorite with the Harlem Globetrotters on the court. ... thanks for listening and if you see Bull tell him his fans in Hawaii say aloha. Bull and his teammates went to some schools where they spread the word on bullying prevention while they were in Hawaii.

In August 2014 Randy Repicky, a Slow Roll squad member reached out to me. He heard I was looking for a bike to use at the Slow Roll Greektown so he brought his Detroit Bike Factory bike for me (fantastic urban bike) which I loved . We met for the first time that evening and it was so thoughtfull the way he looked after us for the evening. I was joined by Sandra McNeil from WWJ thanks to Alisa Zee and Sandra's cousin Emily Baker. We got such a warm welcome as a delightful evening unfolded and our Slow Roll ride took us through areas I rode in the 80's. The HSJGA (Hawaii State Junior Golf Association) presented the 2014 and 8th Asia Pacific Junior Cup, the Ryder Cup style event, at Waikoloa Kings’ Course for the top junior golfers in Japan & Hawaii. Zak Akagi-Bustin, comments on having played in the 1st Asia Pacific Cup. Long time volunteers of HSJGA (Hawaii State Junior Golf Association) Mary Bea Porter King (Co-founder HSJGA), Cathy Torchiana, & Jerry King, all with professional golf backgrounds share the fun and satisfaction of being the Hawaii Captains for the Asia Pacific Junior Cup. The Ryder Cup style event, played at Waikoloa Kings’ Course for the top junior golfers in Japan & Hawaii is just one of the HSJGA success stories. Denise Lindsey, Office Manager, Big Island Television (BITV Channel 130) talks story about the 30 year history of the locally owned and family operated station of AD Ackerman and Noel Black. BITV, 24/7 programming showcases local events, athletes, artists, chefs, beach and recreation information while offering safety tips and highlighting the culture, history and natural wonders of the Big Island. I have known the committed team at BITV for long time and have admired for a long time the wonderful editing and story telling by Lyman Mederios, camerawork by Randy Quander and production assistance by Denise. Very fun to see Coby Ackerman doing the Beach Watch and many segments of Visitor information.

Jeff McDevitt, President of PATH (People’s Advocacy for Trails Hawaii) gives an update on PATH activities in the community.I caught up with Jeff after talking with Janet Higa-Miller owner of BikeWorks Kona with her husband Grant. We were at BikeWorks as they were wrapping up another community training event at BikeWorks on a Sunday morning. They have all three been longtime volunteers with PATH..The volunteer effort by the oommunity on behalf of PATH is amazing and in turn PATH just keeps becoming a stronger advocate for non motorized trails and much more.You can be a voice for PATH by going to pathhawaii.org and signing up for there always informative newsletter.Tina Clothier is the Executive Director moving forward for sure all the good efforts of her predecessor Laura Dierenfield.

Rich Bell, Jeff Manzo & Elle Sumic, BikeWorks Beach & Sport Queens Marketplace at Waikoloa Beach Resort on the Big island of Hawaii talk about several multi sport events in November. Jeff talks about the Ka Makani O Waikoloa Cycling Club and their First Friday Bike Rides for families in Waikoloa. They meet at 7:30pm at Lava Java in Waikoloa Village. This was back in 2014 when Neal Rubin, was columnist with The Detroit News. As of May 2022 he is back with Detroit Free press as columnist.  Neal before arriving in Detroit many years ago was past 3 time Nevada Sportswriter of the Year by National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Assn. We talk story about how Neal loved sports as a kid and how it evolved into his career he loves.. He has been the author of the Gill Thorp comic strip since 2004, and shares how the story line develops.Neal has been a long time friend. The Daniel R. Sayre Memorial Foundation"In the memory of one lost life, others have been saved."I decided to rerun the talk story because of the Daniel Sayre Foundation recent gifting for the purchase of two all-terrain vehicles for Hawaii County Fire Dept. for Punaluu Beach and Hapuna Beach State Park so responders have the capability to quickly carry life-saving equipment and supplies to drowning victims and spinal cord injury victims In 1997, 25-year-old Danny Sayre hiked to the back of Pololu Valley on the Big Island, near Kapaloa Falls, to visit the place he called his "cathedral." Tragically, that visit was Danny's last.His devastated parents, Frank Sayre and Laura Mallery-Sayre, could only watch helplessly, as multiple attempts to rescue their son's body from a 500-foot fall to the valley floor below, failed. "That's when three men from the Fire Department volunteered to move forward with the mission, knowing that they were putting their own lives in danger," recalls Laura. "We decided that a memorial

They continue to grow and fulfill the mission of providing year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for all children and adults with intellectual disabilities. Denise shares about their fundraisers, the coaching opportunities for volunteers, the organizing and participation of special Olympic athletes and families to stage the athletic events and much more.

I've known John & Judy Collins, Co-Founders of the Ironman in 1978 ever since Herb & I crossed the finish line at Ironman 1982 in Kona Hawaii. (yup, we even got the photo!) A nice friendship developed with John & Judy over the years from having a mutual respect for some of the ways we each contributed to shaping the look and feel of Ironman in ways I remember so well.I like sharing some of those stories. I think John & Judy do too. I think the treads of history including right up to today that bring a story together is important and fun to keep alive. I have great memories of going to the library as a keiki and still love to read as a result. Bette Green and Derry Morris with Friends of Library-Waikoloa Region (FL-WR) and JR DeGroote, Reporter with West Hawaii Today also love reading and libraries too. We all live in Waikoloa Village and talk story about the success of the Waikoloa Bookmobile and the community efforts for full library that are under way.
