We are nearing the end of our series ‘Stories Jesus Told’. It has been lovely to consider the deep truths of the Gospel in some of the shortest story accounts in the Bible. Indeed some of these stories have only lasted for just two verses! But here’s the point: Jesus could make clear the things of God in very few words. It’s something a few of us preachers and teachers should sometimes take on board more often perhaps! This morning we look at the parable of the Good Samaritan, one of the most well-known stories ever told. Our Children’s book calls this story ‘The Good Stranger’. Short but deep. There are a host of interpretations and a host of questions: Why does Jesus tell it? Why does he choose to portray a Priest and a Levite as uncaring and unloving? Who exactly were Levites? And then - importantly - how does this connect with me on an August Sabbath morning? We must remember the greatest commandment! Yes – you know the one – the one about loving!
