I was interviewed about my quality improvement work by my good friend Robin Pap - Paramedicine academic and QI thought leader... I love QI. Robin has been recording conversations with QI “experts” (I use inverted commas as I am certainly NOT an expert… more an enthusiast with a couple of projects that have had a decent impact) to share with his 3rd year paramedic students. It is part of a module they are studying called “Quality and Safety in Paramedicine”. Captain Alexander Jolly and Captain Dave Fielding are commercial airline pilots. I met them through Project Wingman, a pandemic-induced collaboration between the UK aviation industry and the NHS.  For the last few months they (along with a few of their colleagues) have been helping us train. Specifically, they are debriefing and writing up human factors performances (overseen by clinical faculty) in a multi-specialty/disciplinary in situ simulation programme. Captain Dave Fielding and Captain Alexander Jolly are commercial airline pilots. I met them through Project Wingman, a pandemic-induced collaboration between the UK aviation industry and the NHS. We met up over a coffee in the Whittington Hospital "First Class Lounge" and compared notes on our respective professions. In particular we discussed human factors and simulation training. Graham Cooke is a Professor of Infectious Diseases at Imperial College London and member of the WHO Essential Medicines Committee. His research has focused on HIV, TB and viral hepatitis. He is currently working on multiple large scale COVID-19 research projects. This is the second of a two-parter with Graham. In this episode we discuss the COVID-19 testing landscape and some of the work he's involved with in this area, including REACT and DNAnudge. Cheers everyone. He was chief investigator on the STOPHCV-1 trial and currently has clinical studies running in the UK and Vietnam. He has also been active in promoting access to medicines and is a member of the WHO Essential Medicines Committee. He is currently working on multiple large scale COVID-19 research projects. This is the first of two episodes which will feature Graham. This is the first of two pods I've recorded with Lt. Col. Dave Grossman - a former US Army Ranger, paratrooper, and Psychology Professor.  He is the author of On Combat: The Psychology and Physiology of Deadly Conflict in War and in Peace; a book that describes coping strategies for the physiological and psychological effects of violence for people forced to kill in their line of work.  On Combat has become a popular book in the Emergency Medicine community. It turns out there are plenty of parallels between the sharp-end of healthcare and the battlefield. This podcast put On Combat on the EM map. This is my talk titled My Mental Toughness Manifesto which On Combat had a huge influence on. Professor Mahdad Noursadeghi is a clinician scientist at UCL and consultant in Infectious Diseases at UCLH. He has a huge research portfolio, including extensive work in HIV and TB immunology. He has recently put the majority of his usual work on hold in order to throw himself (and his laboratory) at the COVID 19 research effort. We chat about COVID's impact on science and the scientific community, some of the COVID projects he's involved with including ISARIC and PERISKOPE, and the potential impact of this disease in TB and HIV hotspots. Dr. Oliver Flower is a British Intensive Care Consultant based at the Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney, Australia. He is one of the creators of the SMACC conference which has been a driving force for the social media-driven revolution in medical education. He is passionate about Neurocritical Care, graphic design and Mixed Martial Arts (he practices jiu jitsu and has worked as a cage-side doctor). Dr. Chris Odedun is a senior emergency medicine trainee in London. He is involved with clinical leadership and is currently on the Royal College of Physicians Chief Registrar scheme. Chris is also a DJ and Radio Host. He creates and produces Music Takes Me Up, which is played on Netil Radio. He curates old and new music from a range of genres with descriptive interludes. Henry May is a social entrepreneur based in Bogotá, Columbia. He is the CEO and co-founder of Coschool, an organisation that transforms the lives of young people across the Colombia by building their character and leadership skills.  He is also the founder of The Huracan Foundation which provides financial support to a selection of grassroots initiatives in low income communities that use football to inspire children and improve education. Dr. Fatima Ahmed is an obstetrics and gynaecology registrar based in Birmingham. She is also an NHS Clinical Entrepreneur with an interest in digital health. Simon Flemming is a senior orthopaedics trainee and former President of the British Orthopaedics Trainee Association (BOTA). He is currently working on his Medical Education PhD. He is the man behind the #HammerItOut campaign which tackles bullying, undermining and harassment in orthopaedics. The campaign has been so successful that other specialties are now following suit and Simon has become a leading voice for culture change in the NHS and global healthcare. Dr. Liz O'Riordan is a Consultant Breast Surgeon. In July 2015 she was diagnosed with Stage III breast cancer at the age of 40. She started a blog after her diagnosis to document her experiences as a patient. The blog has become a hugely popular (and award-winning) resource, paving the way for a  "Woman of the Year" nomination in 2016. Liz is now a regular keynote speaker and media personality. She had a local recurrence of her cancer in May 2018, and completed her treatment in September. Liz co-authored "The Complete Guide to Breast Cancer: How to Feel Empowered and Take Control" with Professor Trisha Greenhalgh- a GP and fellow breast cancer survivor. The book was published in September 2018. Her latest project is cancerfit.me - a website providing a range of resources regarding exercise for people living with cancer. Adnan is a junior doctor and medical film producer. He is the producer of Nora, a film that premiered at the BFI IMAX cinema as part of TEDxNHS 2018. The film is set to be shown at several international film festivals over the course of the next year. He is an NHS Clinical Entrepreneur and graduate of the Darzi Leadership Programme.
