  • Manga Mavericks @ Movies #31: The Best Movies of 2017!

    01/01/2019 Duración: 57min

It’s a New Year, and as they say, out with the old and in with the new! Manga Mavericks @ Movies has been stuck in 2017 for the entirety of 2018, but today we’re wiping our slate clean by sharing our final thoughts on the films of that year! Back in March of last year we recorded and released our Oscars podcast, discussing what they thought were the best films of 2017. During our recording of that episode we also discussed what our favorite films of 2017 were, but we cut that segment out of the episode so that we could finish it in time for the night of the Oscars. Now, having finally released all our unreleased podcasts we recorded from 2017, it’s finally time to release this episode and reveal our favorite films of that year! Both VLord and I share our individual top six favorite films, together comprising a top eleven total! But wait, shouldn’t six plus six equal a top twelve? Well, as it turns out, our number one favorite film of 2017 was the same! Which film was so good that we both couldn’t resist listi

  • Manga Mavericks @ Movies #30: Wonder Woman

    30/12/2018 Duración: 02h38min

At long last, we’re releasing the last of the episodes of Manga Mavericks @ Movies we recorded in 2017! It’s a wonder why it took so long for these to come out, but I’m relieved we finished releasing theme before the end of the year. Speaking of wonders, can you believe the DCEU is still a thing? Aquaman is doing pretty well for itself both commercially and critically, which you can’t say about most films from that cinematic universe. Except, of course, Wonder Woman - the DCEU’s most beloved film and the subject of this episode! All DC’s hopes were pinned on it and the magic that it’d do, and it changed our minds and changed the world (for DC films)! Originally recorded in June 2017 on the weekend the movie came out, we’re once again joined by Vix and Ethan to discuss what made Wonder Woman so wonderful! Enjoy the show, and follow us on twitter at @manga_mavericks, on tumblr at mangamavericks.tumblr.com, and now on Youtube! • Manga Mavericks EP. 71: Jumping Into a New Era

    24/12/2018 Duración: 04h58min

For the entirety of 2018, we have been celebrating the 50th anniversary of Shonen Jump by covering various Jump manga throughout the year, but now it is time. It is time to reveal what we have been planning whilst celebrating the magazine's milestone, an even BIGGER celebration of our beloved anthology! So big that we had to scale back the amount of work we were putting into it, going from a planned multi-part podcast celebration interviewing 10+ individuals from all walks of life, to a collection of whatever interviews were already recorded to release in order to commemorate the English Shonen Jump's transition from digital magazine to full blown subscription service!! On this very special episode of Manga Mavericks, Colton & Lum gather a handful of past guests to sit down and talk to them about their experiences with Weekly Shonen Jump, including: Maxy Barnard, Sam Leach, Doctor, and Jeff Ruberg! We cover Shonen Jump from many different facets, from our favorite titles, our reading experiences, and man

  • Manga Mavericks @ Movies #29: Captain Underpants

    23/12/2018 Duración: 01h35min

We’re finally winding down on our backlog episodes of Manga Mavericks @ Movies! We’ve only got two reviews left, both recorded in June 2017, with both films about superheroes who fight villains in their underwear. One’s so on the nose about it, he calls himself Captain Underpants! Dav Pilkey’s comic books about the tidy-whitey titan was a childhood favorite of ours, so we invited a panel of passionate manchildren to discuss what they loved about this Dreamworks-animated theatrical adaptation! When it takes us ten minutes to wrap up the show, you know you’re in for some cacophonous criticism of this cromulent cartoon! Enjoy the show, and follow us on twitter at @manga_mavericks, on tumblr at mangamavericks.tumblr.com, and now on Youtube! • Manga Mavericks @ Movies #28: Thor: Ragnarok

    21/12/2018 Duración: 01h37min

So, Aquaman is in theatres. It’s a film about the buff bearded prince of a high-fantasy, regal realm separate from the world of man, who has to fight his evil brother, reclaim the throne, and protect his people and humankind. Huh. Doesn’t that remind you of someone else? Another superhero from another comic-book based cinematic universe perhaps? Who could it be? Such a mystery… Ok, seriously, Aquaman is the Thor of DC. Except the Aquaman film’s swashbuckling tone is more similar to Thor: Ragnarok than the first two overly serious Thor movies. So what better time to release our review of Thor: Ragnarok! How’s that for a justification of why this podcast is coming out a year late? Enjoy the show, and follow us on twitter at @manga_mavericks, on tumblr at mangamavericks.tumblr.com, and now on Youtube! • Manga Mavericks @ Movies #27: Spider-Man: Homecoming

    20/12/2018 Duración: 01h47min

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is the best Spider-Man film yet! With it currently swinging its way into box office success, we’re finally releasing our review of the last critically acclaimed Spider-Man film...last year’s Spider-Man: Homecoming! We’re joined by our resident comics history connoisseur and all-around Spider-geek Vix to discuss how faithful Homecoming was to Spider-Man’s history and how it compares to other film and television interpretations of the character! Of course, any podcast with Vix is sure to weave webs of wild tangents, to the point we decided to cut out an hour of this recording and turn it into its own separate episode! Still, we spent over a good hour and a half focused on Homecoming, so get into the swing of it and listen away! Enjoy the show, and follow us on twitter at @manga_mavericks, on tumblr at mangamavericks.tumblr.com, and now on Youtube! You can also follow LumRanmaYasha at @lumranmayasha, VLordGTZ at @VLordGTZ, and special guest Vix at @vixythevaliant. Don’t forget

  • Manga Mavericks @ Movies #26: Yu-Gi-Oh! The Pyramid of Light

    18/12/2018 Duración: 01h19min

It’s time to du-du-du-du du-du-du-DUEL...opinions on a Yu-Gi-Oh! Movie! But not just any Yu-Gi-Oh! movie; we’re talking about THE Yu-Gi-Oh! Movie, its first theatrical feature, The Pyramid of Light! Recently re-released by Fathom Events in theaters earlier this year, the Mavericks managed to see it at the very same AMC theatre they originally saw it at when they were kids. Oh, the nostalgia! Of course, The Pyramid of Light has a notorious reputation for being a terrible film - it’s the second lowest rated animated movie on both Rotten Tomatoes AND Metacritic for heaven’s sake! So, did the Mavericks regret their decision to sit through this film again, or did the heart of cards guide them through? The answer might surprise you... • Manga Mavericks EP. 69: *Nice*

    15/12/2018 Duración: 01h11min

It’s the 69th episode of Manga Mavericks! NICE! To celebrate the occasion we wanted to record a podcast that was appropriately lewd and meme-worthy...but we didn’t get the chance to. Luckily, we didn’t need to record anything new because we already had something that fit perfectly! About a year and a half ago we recorded an episode of Manga Mavericks @ Movies with our good friend Vix, which derailed into long, off-tangent asides about Sonic, Archie comics, the X-Men, MUMKEY JONES, and many more bizarre topics! This hour of madness has nothing to do with Spider-Man Homecoming, but (mostly) everything to do with comics and memes, and is laughs a plenty! Don’t worry, we’ll have another manga-focused podcast out very soon, but for now enjoy this blast from the past and we and Vix discuss some stuff we don’t normally talk about in an out-of-control podcast gone rogue! Enjoy the show, and follow us on twitter at @manga_mavericks, on tumblr at mangamavericks.tumblr.com, and now on Youtube! You can also follow LumR

  • Manga Mavericks & Anime #02: Dragon Ball Super

    14/12/2018 Duración: 03h26min

Today is the day Dragon Ball Super fans have been waiting for. After months of waiting, a long-awaited project fans have been clamoring for has arrived. And no, I’m not talking about the Broly movie. That’s right folks, it took only six months to get it done, but our Dragon Ball Super podcast is finally here! Joining us for this super Super podcast are Sam Leach, One Piece Podcast contributor and daily streaming reviewer for Anime News Network, and for the very first time on Manga Mavericks we’re joined by Chris Larios, host of Weekly Manga Recap and The Super Larios Bros. Show! We discuss our histories with Dragon Ball and our thoughts on the entirety of Dragon Ball Super, digging especially deep into the Tournament of Power. We express how much we liked the comedy, adored Master Roshi’s dramatic moments, got hyped for the fights, frustrated over Tenshinhan’s treatment, confused by Gohan’s character arc, disappointed by Krillin’s quick elimination, and a whole lot more! We run the gamut of emotions, but al

  • Manga Mavericks @ Movies #24: Mirai

    07/12/2018 Duración: 17min

Whoa, what’s this? We’re actually talking about a recent movie for once? We’re really releasing a podcast we recorded recently and not over a year ago? WHAT’S GOING ON?!?! Well, let me tell you! VLord and I haven’t gotten a chance to record many new @ Movies podcasts this year, and we’ve taken such a long time to sift through our backlog of already recorded podcasts there hasn’t been a need. However, we’ve still been seeing as many movies as ever, and I’ve been writing reviews for some that I’ve really wanted to share my thoughts on. Last week I saw Mamoru Hosoda's newest film Mirai and wrote a review of it, but I really wanted to discuss it on the podcast as well. Unfortunately, VLord’s too busy and most of my friends who’d be interested in discussing it with me haven’t seen it yet. So I’ve decided to try something different and record a solo @ Movies podcast on Mirai, essentially reading out my review for those of you who haven’t read it yet or would prefer listening to it. If you guys like this format I

Including a whole lot of exciting licensing news that came out of Anime NYC from every publisher you could think of!! Amongst the enormous amount of news, we also have time to discuss other topics such as the current state of Shonen Sunday, Colton's only other hated anime besides Elfen Lied, and Bomber's weekend at Anime NYC! • Manga Mavericks @ Movies #23: No Game No Life Zero

    28/11/2018 Duración: 01h05min

We're getting into the home stretch of hitertho unreleased Manga Mavericks @ Movies episodes from 2017! From this point onwards each podcast will contain an hour-long+ review of a single movie. These next couple episodes will be focused on anime movie reviews, including one of the few @ Movies we've actually recorded this year. Afterwards we'll have a few episodes dedicated to superhero blockbusters from last year, all of which featuring our good friend Vix and will hopefully be timed to release alongside some relevant superhero blockbusters coming out in December! Will we actually be able to clear our backlog of 2017 episodes by the end of this year so we can start fresh in 2019? Either way, we're getting into some really good episodes, so look forward to listening to them!  On this episode, we talk about No Game No Life Zero, the prequel film to No Game No Life that adapts its sixth volume and was released in North American theatres in October 2017 by Sentai Filmworks. Both Lum and VLord were big fans of N

  • Manga Mavericks EP 67: Stealth Symphony

    23/11/2018 Duración: 01h25min

On this episode of Manga Mavericks, while Lum is away, Colton (despite the undisclosed amount of food he had during Thanksgiving) manages to record with good friend and frequent contributor, Maxy Barnard, as they both take a look at Ryohgo Narita & Yoichi Amano's Stealth Symphony, as apart of their ongoing series of cancelled Shonen Jump manga podcasts! Colton is floored by some of Narita's twists and curve balls revealed in the back half of the story, while Maxy struggles to figure out whether one mediocre story arc determines his overall enjoyment of the series or not, just as it may have with readers back in the day. Stealth Symphony is quite the wild ride, so Colton and Maxy talk about everything they can about what might be the most dense, short-lived Jump manga ever made! Enjoy! 15/11/2018 Duración: 01h28min

A mini-series about a world ravaged by war and disaster and the humans and demons who try and take back their water supply from a corrupt monarchy. Colton discusses the series as someone who has only read it for the first time, while Lum discusses his experience revisiting the series via its original run in Viz Media's Shonen Jump Magazine all the way back from 2003! 09/11/2018 Duración: 01h55min

On this episode of Manga Mavericks, its time once again (as much as we try and avoid it) for another news episode, but to spice things up, we're joined once again by our lovable, chicken hating friend from Friendship Effort Victory, Maxy Barnard, as we discuss GANGSTA. author Kohske's recent outcry on Twitter against scanlations of her work and how we feel about people's responses to her tweets, as well as manga piracy in general. Other topics and news pieces we discuss on this episode include Maxy's excitement over new things coming from Grand Jump, the new Goku balloon being featured in this year's Macy's Thanksgiving Parade, and the announcement of a live action Hollywood Attack on Titan movie! • Manga Mavericks @ Movies #22: Black Butler and Fairy Tail

    08/11/2018 Duración: 01h14min

So, what are we reviewing this week on @ Movies? Weird live-action adaptations of anime franchises? Boring/offensive historical films set in the U.K.? Visually inventive and emotionally poignant french animated films? Maybe some more Oscar-nominated animated films that will make VLord rant about how the Oscars are bullshit and how much he hates Disney again? No, on this episode of Manga Mavericks @ Movies we review...anime movies? Whoa, who would have thunk that the Manga Mavericks would review anime films on their movie podcast? How bizarre.  But yes, for the first time in over a dozen episodes we're actually reviewing honest-god anime films on the show. Well, we released the Kabaneri review a few weeks ago, but this time both films on this episode are anime films. That's not where their simmilarities end either. Both are A-1 pictures film adaptations of popular long-running shonen franchises that were licensed and released in U.S. theatres by FUNimation in the summer of 2017, with Black Butler screening to

  • Manga Mavericks EP. 64: Haruhi Solves Math!

    06/11/2018 Duración: 53min

ANOTHER NEWS EPISODE?! NOOOOOO!!!! Yes, circumstances have conspired to rob us of a topic this week. Sadly, the Yu Yu Hakusho podcast we planned is on indefinite hiatus. We recorded a great show, but one of our guests' audio was lost to the ether, and trying to gather the gang back together to rerecord it is too difficult right now with our competing schedules. Fear not, for we will not abandon doing a Yu Yu Hakusho-related podcast completely! We intend to record a Yu Yu Hakusho MANGA FIGHT sometime in the coming weeks to make up for the lost show. With any luck it'll be recorded and released before the end of the year! As for this episode, while we may not have a discussion topic, we're making up for it by introducing a new segments - Community Shout-Outs! From now on at the end of every show we'll shine a spotlight on art, videos, blogs, podcasts, and other content created by the Anime fan community that we really enjoyed and want to share. This week we're spotlighting two great podcasts from One Panel La

  • Manga Mavericks @ Movies #21: Loving Vincent and Coco

    31/10/2018 Duración: 01h02min

Welcome back to Manga Mavericks @ Movies, the only movie podcast that releases what was supposed to be last year's Thanksgiving special on Halloween! I mean hey, you can argue these films also fit the Halloween spirit. I mean, Coco is about skeletal ghosts and the underworld and Loving Vincent is a murder-mystery thriller. They fit the aesthetic and mood, I think.   Well, as you can tell, this week we're discussing Loving Vincent and Coco, two of the Best Animated Picture contenders at last year's Academy Awards! Those who've listened to our Oscars podcast from earlier this year should already know our general opinions of these films, and our full reviews of these features go more in-depth into what makes them so artistically excellent! Until VLord starts ranting about why he hates Disney and why the Oscars' Best Animated Feature award is rigged in their favor denying accolades to far superior films. Things get so heated that at one point VLord threatens to quit the podcast! Hey, maybe this podcast is scary
