What is a virtual farm show? Nick Zachrich, Farm Science Review Manager, joins us to discuss what it means to take a farm show virtual. Dr. John Fulton, Professor and Extension Specialist with the FABE Department, provides tips on combine prep from mechanics to digital technology. Why is it important to calibrate your yield monitor and how often should you do it? What other information should I be collecting? Jack Sommers and Tim McDaniel, farmers in Champaign County, talk about how they got started using cover crops and what it means for their operation today. Ben Brown, Assistant Professor with the Department of Agricultural, Environmental and Development Economics at the Ohio State University discusses current market factors affecting grain prices. We get into purchases to China and how well they are holding up their end of the trade deal. Ethanol is also a big consumer of corn that has been affected by the Coronavirus. Ben shares numbers and estimates and how he sees ethanol number trending for the rest of the year. He also gives a few quick tips on marketing strategy for this fall and winter. Our guest this week, Dr. Aaron Wilson, does a fact check on wives’ tales used to predict the weather. We had several submitted by our listeners. Join us to find out which ones hold water and which ones are just plain wrong! We break them down into the 3 categories used most to predict weather: Critters, Plants and Current Weather. Dr. Wilson ends the podcast with a brief outlook for the remainder of the growing season.

Farmers from Logan and Champaign Counties received a National Wildlife Federation Cover Crop Champion grant to spread the word about using cover crops. Linda Vernon and Tim Lyden join us to share why they are so passionate about cover crops. Tim discusses his history in using cover, the challenges he’s faced as well has the benefits seen on his farm. As part of the grant, we will hold farmer round table meetings around Champaign and Logan Counties. We have seen a yield decrease in forages this year due to a number of factors. Christine Gelley, The Ohio State University Extension Educator in Noble County, joins us to discuss practices to improve forage production through time management and fertility. Brian Case joins us from Champaign County to talk about his first generation farm. He discusses how he started his first generation farm, the involvement of his family and their future plans and a unique equipment sharing agreement he has with two other farmers in his area. We also discuss raising barley and improving soil quality.

Gene Baumgardner, a farmer in Fayette and Madison Counties, joins us this week. His partnership with their dairy operation allows him to diversify his crop portfolio and reduce fertilizer costs through manure application. He also shares his experiences serving on the Ohio Corn and Wheat Growers Association board which led him to Morocco and Cyprus.

We continue our farmer interviews with Geoff Mavis. He and his family farm in Fayette County, Ohio. We discuss a number of topics including: farm transition, farmland preservation, on-farm technology and wildlife rehabilitation.

To kick of the 2020 planting season, we interviewed some farmers around Ohio to see what unique and innovative practices they have implemented. Today we introduce you to Aaron Overholser who farms in Darke County. He looks at every acre as an opportunity to learn something new. Aaron farms with his parents and wife and has been very active in conducting on-farm research with OSU Extension.

Weed specialists Dr. Aaron Hager, University of Illinois, and Dr. Mark Loux, Ohio State University, continue our discussion on waterhemp with chemical and mechanical control recommendations. Illinois farmers have dealt with multi-way resistance in Waterhemp for years. Dr. Hager shares his experience and recommendations as we are start to see extensive issues with this weed make its way into Ohio.

Illinois farmers have dealt with multi-way resistance in Waterhemp for years. Dr. Hager shares his experience and recommendations as we are start to see extensive issues with this weed make its way into Ohio.

We are joined by Lee Beers, Ohio State University Extension Educator in Trumbull County. Lee has researched the rules, regulations, markets, economics and agronomy of growing hemp. He shares a bit of his knowledge with us to give farmers some insight into whether this may be an alternative crop to add to their rotation.

We are joined by Jason Hartschuh and Chris Zoller, Ohio State University Extension educators who worked with farmers in their counties to conduct on-farm research trials published in the 2019 eFields Report. This is the 3rd year for this program and includes 88 trials in 30 counties across Ohio. Soybean seeding rate and nitrogen application to corn are a couple of trials highlighted in the podcast, along with some forage studies that were added due to prevented plant situations.
