Since starting this You Love to See It spinoff (focussing on weirder or more niche horror), we’ve been enamored with movies that blend drama and horror. Belzebuth used terrifying real-life imagery (depicting too-real scenes of violence) before the statue scene, and here, in Andrzej Żuławski’s only english-language film, we see much ado about personal drama and a marriage falling apart alongside all the gory, gruesome stuff. But there is plenty of both, and today’s trio of merritt, Collin, and Danielle all grappled with their own interpretations of this beautifully-shot, gut-wrenching movie. Since actor and activist John Boyega (perhaps best known as Finn from the latest Star Wars trilogy) has been making a stir lately with awesome speeches, we thought we’d revisit the movie that landed him his first starring Role. Attack the Block is a small-scale alien invasion movie, with a lot of heart, a ton of energy, and some interesting messages. Focusing on a group of inner-city kids who get involved in a bizarre alien menace, encounter a bunch of white people who maybe learn a thing or two, and, for a brief moment, Pogo the dog, it’s a compact, breezy, funny thriller. So, get this… if you die in the game, you die in REAL LIFE. That’s not the entire premise of Stay Alive, a delightfully goofy 2006 thriller starring beloved character actors like Jimmi Simpson, Frankie Muniz, and Adam Goldberg. But it is… a lot of it. Combining surprisingly good pulls from the annals of gaming (one of the screenwriters knew about Fatal Frame!) just as often as wildly (wonderfully) corny lines, and some of the best/worst death scenes this side of a Roger Corman special, Stay Alive was a real treat for today’s crew of Danielle, merritt, Elby, and John. Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within is not a great movie. It’s probably not even a good movie. But it’s a fairly interesting film, at least for some of its bits of historic significance: it was supposed to launch a “digital actress” in Ming-Na Wen’s character, Dr. Aki Ross. It was stupidly expensive. It flopped so hard that the movie was both the first - and the last - Square Pictures picture.
