080 - It's JCVD week again, and we are re-visiting his second movie from 1993 - Hard Target. This movie is HISTORIC, not just for the mullet, or the motorbike surfing, or rattlesnake-punching, but it's also the first Hollywood studio picture to be helmed by an Asian director. That's right, it's John Woo, in his first American picture, and while he doesn't fully unleash the Woo, his trademarks are all over this thing. Plus Wilford Brimley is in this, what else do you want? 079 - We hit the other end of the Burton spectrum this week, with 1996's Mars Attacks! This film capped off an incredible hot streak for the auteur - he had become the hottest director in town and could make anything he gosh-darn wanted. Need proof? Just look at this cast, it is STACKED. Too long to list here so we won't even try. This film was also Burton's first big flop, and would prove to become the first speed bump on what went on to be a much bumpier career from this point on. But what about the movie? Is it any good? We have been wanting to rewatch this one for.ev.er, and here we are. This is actually one of the smallest movies we have ever covered if you look at box office, but if you look at cultural significance, this thing was HUGE! Even all the way down here in Australia (where it was called The Sandlot Kids). For a lot of us, it's how we heard about s'mores, chewing tobacco and Wendy Peffercorn - and our induction to Baseball Americana. But how does it hold up today? Despite seeming like an inferior cash-in on the craze created by the more critically and commercially successful, Scream, this movie was written by the same gosh darn guy! So there's that. But just why doesn't this movie hit the heights of the aforementioned Wes Craven masterpiece? 074 -While it's not our first Nic Cage movie, nor is it our first John Travolta movie, it IS the first movie we have covered where these two guys switch faces. It's also our first John Woo movie, in what was really his first US opportunity to fully unleash the Woo. Needless to say, we are excited. While this movie gets quite a bit of airtime in 90s-action-movies-of-excess conversation - and often gets lumped into a 'so bad it's good' category of film - we would argue otherwise. 072 - One of the greatest cross-over events of the 90s was the partnership between Tarantino and Rodriguez, the fruits of which emerged as the 1996 mish-mash vampire romp, From Dusk Till Dawn. This movie meant a lot to us growing up, and not just for the Selma Hayek stuff. Ok a little bit for the Salma Hayek stuff (we were teens, give us a break). Looking at this thing with fresh eyes in the land of 2020, this movie only becomes more interesting. It's premise seeming somehow more bold. Tarantino incredibly seeming even MORE creepy. His foot fetish somehow even more pronounced. More, more, more. The list goes on. There is pretty much something for everybody here. However, back in the 70s and 80s, this thing wasn't so easy to sell, and was stuck in development hell as it bounced around Hollywood for over a decade, with various combinations of directors and leading men attached - from Patrick Swayze to Richard Dreyfuss. Yep. This movie's origin story is stacked. The film that launched the careers of Heath Ledger and Rose Byrne was a big deal to us in our youth - it was the gritty tale from the underbelly of Sydney that a teenage Tristan and Greg were absolutely frothing for. This was up there with Lock Stock for Aussie teens, and captured a side of Sydney that up until that point, hadn't really been represented on the mainstream big screen.
