Noisextra - The Noise Podcast.

‘Tis the season to hang the mistletoe, pour the eggnog and break out Smell & Quim’s “The Christmas Album” cassette. Dave Walklett lent his voice to give some background and ideas behind this tape as we trim the tree to the rambunctious noise contained within. This Christmas, march to the Quim Republic with Noisextra.

2020 comes to a close, therefore it is time to discuss our favorite noise of the year. We each brought 5 releases to talk about, but of course that’s not enough for us noise maniacs, so we end up going into much more. Our deepest, noisiest THANK YOU to all of our listeners this year...we have only just begun.

Randy Yau joins us for a discussion on his work, both sonic and visual, and we couldn’t have been more honored. His live sets are stuff of legend, and he gets into preparing for a set as well as his recording process (hint: bathrooms are involved). For this important noise history lesson, we will provide the paper, but you need to bring your own celery.

Stephen Petrus (Murderous Vision/Live Bait Recording Foundation) joins us to discuss the classic “Death Odors” compilation on Slaughter Productions. Petrus talks about the importance of compilations to his journey, in terms of both listening and releasing. This episode is coming out in tandem with a brand new comp that Stephen has curated entitled “Dies Natalis Invicti Solis” featuring Brighter Death Now, Deutsch Nepal, Contrastate and many more. The CD will be available for pre order on Friday December 4th.

From Public Bath Records to Public Bath Press, Kato David Hopkins has been flying the flag of Japanese sounds since the 1980s. He’s seen it all... from the very first Masonna shows, to innumerable classic shows at the legendary Bears club. His most recent work is a great book called “Rumors of Noizu: Hijokaidan and the Road to 2nd Damascus” that traces the experimental music scene in Japan leading up to the debut Hijokaidan LP. Get your pen and paper out for another fascinating noise history lesson.

Rhythmic noise puts us squarely in a sci-fi future as we ride the space ways with Sonar’s eponymous debut album. Our minds radiate and we sink into the waters of swampheaven with this CD of head churn electronics. Peek behind the metal doors and witness the medical experiments in progress.

The Pure series enters our ears again in the harshest way possible with Dead Body Love “Maximum Dose.” Mike attempts to turn it down, Tara scolds Mike and won’t let him, and Greh runs his girlfriend out of the room. These are all proper reactions to this slice of 90s Italian noise, courtesy of the most important series in noise.

The ancient world is alive as we discuss "Missing Volume" by the seminal and mysterious Japanese project S·Core. Fire, fog, and hidden places are all contained within these two sides of dark atmosphere. We embark on a yearly Halloween tradition as we go deep on Atrax Morgue "Woundfucker," recorded on Halloween of 1994. An album that has been with all of us for as long as we can remember, "Woundfucker" never fails to affect all of our souls. We relay some of Marco Corbelli’s thoughts via old interviews and dissect what we revere about Atrax Morgue.

Voices from somewhere beyond interrupt our signal as we discuss “The Ghost Orchid - An Introduction to EVP” CD from 1999. Keeping with the Halloween season, we talk ghosts, the unexplained, as well as the history of EVP recording and the main researchers behind the study of this phenomena. Set your dial to a ghost frequency and hear what can be heard.

Halloween season creeps on and we discuss a very fitting album for the autumn atmosphere — “The Curse of the Scarecrow” by Megaptera. Farm machinery creaks in the distance while the scarecrow’s spell takes hold. We have entered October, the best month of the year, and wanted to do something different to kick off the Halloween season, so we decided to do a special horror movie episode with Black Leather Jesus. Sean, Richard, and the three of us selected some of our horror favorites and had a round robin discussion. Be a fly on the wall for an after-show hang out with noise and movie fanatics. With the upcoming “Fragmentation” 4 LP set on Hospital Productions, we had the pleasure to chat with Christina Sealey and Rich Oddie of Orphx. We go into their early days of warehouse shows and noise culture. A fascinating look at a pocket of sound experimentation emanating from a small Canadian enclave, Orphx are one of the most unique noise projects of any era.

In part two of our discussion with Dominick Fernow, we get into his first months in Providence, leading up to a pilgrimage to Lowell, MA on Halloween 1999. Before leaving for Providence, Dominick tells a story of attempting to book a show for a noise legend in Madison. Grab a walkman and some noise tapes and come along for some more invaluable noise history.

In the first of two episodes, Dominick Fernow joins us to discuss the very beginnings of Prurient and Hospital Productions. We begin the journey in '90s Wisconsin as he navigates the worlds of death metal and techno, which eventually leads to the noise underground. While the three of us have all known Dominick for nearly two decades, we all learned plenty of new and incredible information about his most distant past. Join us for some highly enlightening noise history. Noisextra is assisting Hospital Productions to compile a live Prurient box set commemorating the 25th anniversary of the project. It was an honor to have Erik Hoffman on to discuss his history in noise. We get into his special packaging obsession during his time running Pinch-a-Loaf, touring Japan with Spastic Colon, the story behind the legendary Ground Fault label and so much more. Another important lesson on noise from one of the originals.

Drift back to the 16th century with us as we dig into the fantastic and obscure “Utrecht” album by Nightmarish. This episode is part noise and part history podcast with Tara going deep into the historical subject and themes of this record. Explore the darkness of the Spanish occupation of the Netherlands and be consumed by the veil of Nightmarish.

Somehow we had not yet covered a Ground Fault CD, so we rectify that with a wallop of a disc in the form of Government Alpha “Sporadic Spectra.” Pure Japanese harsh noise oozes from our speakers, sends us to science fiction futures, and cures Tara’s headache. Heed the opening warning signal and enter the harsh world of Government Alpha.

We had the absolute pleasure to talk with Scott Arford and to dive into his work as Radiosonde and under his own name, as well as his part in the public access show “Fuck TV” and the legendary 7hz venue, studio, and label. In addition we talk zombie movies, static, and the importance of one particular fortune cookie. Another noise history lesson is underway, and you better take notes because there may be a pop up quiz down the line.

Sounds shrouded in mist hover as we discuss “Normal” by Brume. While it’s hard to put this CD into words, we do our best as we talk about split brains, psychological planes, and the places Christian Renou’s work takes us. Fade into its haunted essence and discover new ways for sound to ignite fires.
