Jane Mathews was born in England, but her career in advertising enabled her to live all over the world (Amsterdam, Chicago, Singapore, London) but now she calls Sydney, Australia home.  When she got divorced several years ago, and unexpectedly found herself living alone, she tried to find a book to help navigate its sometimes treacherous shallows, but couldn't. So she wrote one herself.  "The Art of Living Alone and Loving It" seems to have really resonated with readers and it has been translated into 8 languages. Her premise is that to enjoy living alone you have to examine each aspect of your life and adapt it to solo living accordingly.  You have to course correct and be proactive.  People living alone is the fastest growing demographic in the world.  We are a mighty army, although it doesn't always feel like it, and there remains a stigma to living alone, not to mention the specter of loneliness sulking in the corner.   

At 86, Carol Bauer is still on call around the clock in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Norwalk Hospital in Connecticut.  This fiery and charismatic volunteer and interfaith chaplain spends long days and many late nights supporting families in crisis, advising staff, comforting and cuddling sick babies, and helping parents cope with unimaginable loss. Supporting Norwalk Hospital is a family affair. Carol’s husband, George Bauer, a respected executive who spent more than 30 years with IBM, has served as a member of the Norwalk Hospital Board of Trustees, the Norwalk Hospital Foundation board, and WCHN Board of Directors.

At age 52, Adrienne's 75-year-old mother convinced her to attend a line dance class with her (it was becoming all the rage).  She fell in love with it and within a year began teaching.  Since then she has taught weekly line dance classes for the past 25 years, created and perform with the Rhinestone Grannies dance troupe for the past 20 years.  The Grannies perform over 60 shows a year throughout San Diego County. 

Louise Aronson, MD, is the author of the story collection A HISTORY OF THE PRESENT ILLNESS and a geriatrician, educator, and professor of medicine at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), where she directs UCSF Medical Humanities. A graduate of Harvard Medical School and the MFA Program for Writers at Warren Wilson College, Dr. Aronson has received numerous awards for her medical work, teaching, educational research, and writing. The recipient of a MacDowell fellowship and four Pushcart nominations, her articles and stories have appeared in many publications, including The New York Times, New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet, and Bellevue Literary Review. She lives in San Francisco. 

On May 23rd, an Act dubbed S.E.C.U.R.E., Setting Every Community Up for Retirement Enhancement Act, passed the House of Representatives. A nearly identical bill, the Retirement Enhancement Securities Act (RESA), is currently in front of the Senate. The eventual legislation will likely have aspects of both. Whatever the nuances in the ultimate Act, the legislation is the most significant change in retirement-related laws since 2006.

Joshua Chodosh, MD, MSHS, holds the inaugural endowed Michael L. Freedman Professor of Geriatric Research in the Division of Geriatric Medicine and Palliative Care in the Department of Medicine at NYU School of Medicine.
