  • 39. Does Data Exist?

    12/08/2019 Duración: 23min

Data has been heralded as the next oil! Given this, it is clear that people are very excited about what data will be able to do for humanity. However, data is very different than oil (obviously). Today's episode, and the slate of episodes this week, work out what we actually mean by calling data a raw material.Of course, data exists, but it exists in a way that all other natural raw materials do not. Namely, data is something purely constructed by humans to understand the world around us. Tune in to the shows this week to consider what this raw material is and how we will use it to change our world!Data Couture is running a Kickstarter Campaign!!!! • 38. (Data Bites) Predicting Flight Delays Could Save you So Much Airport Misery

    09/08/2019 Duración: 07min

Who wouldn't want to know three days ahead of time whether their flight was delayed or even canceled?Today's episode covers the many variables involved in predicting whether your flight will be delayed. At the moment these algorithms are only about 80% accurate, but, as they get more and more refined, we may never have to sit around airports waiting for our delayed flight to take off!I know I'm excited about this potential! To keep up with the podcast be sure to visit our website at datacouture.org, follow us on twitter @datacouturepod, and on instagram @datacouturepodcast. 07/08/2019 Duración: 07min

Following up on Monday's episode, we go into a deeper dive on one of the areas that the airline industry is employing machine learning techniques.Dynamic Pricing is a way to optimize ticket sales taking into account facts about the customer's buying habits, flight information, weather conditions, and more. Today's episode takes into account the many variables that go into successfully developing a dynamic pricing strategy as well as how it may directly affect you!To keep up with the podcast be sure to visit our website at datacouture.org, follow us on twitter @datacouturepod, and on instagram @datacouturepodcast. • 35. (Data Bites) Massive Data Requirements for Self Driving Cars

    02/08/2019 Duración: 06min

Autonomous vehicles not only require massive amounts of data to effectively "see" the world, but also generate literal terabytes of data per hour of usage! This means that in order for the algorithms to continually learn and improve, there must be an economical way to move that massive amount of data in an efficient way. While there are companies that are beginning to specialize in this niche, a significant investment in localized data movement must be made for autonomous vehicles to become ubiquitous across the world! To keep up with the podcast be sure to visit our website at datacouture.org, follow us on twitter @datacouturepod, and on instagram @datacouturepodcast. • 33. Autonomous Vehicles are Driven and Derailed by BlockChain

    29/07/2019 Duración: 23min

On this special episode of Data Couture, Jordan is recording while driving from Colorado back to the Midwest. The 12 hour drive has inspired the topic this week: Self-Driving Cars! Specifically, we talk about three important issues facing the implementation of autonomous vehicles globally. The first is the ability for the artificial intelligence and deep learning algorithms to accurately see the world to be able to drive and avoid obstacles in our complicated roadways. The second problem exacerbates the first when it comes to computer vision experiencing inclement weather. The current technology makes it nearly an impossible feat. The final problem is our (humans) unpredictable relationship with roadways. How many of us have glued our eyes on our phone while crossing a street?!?Get ready for some roadway self-driving problems, solutions, and problems to the solutions! To keep up with the podcast be sure to visit our website at datacouture.org, follow us on twitter @datacouturepod, and on instagram @datacou

Data Science and the Data Profession, generally, is deeply lacking in a fundamental resource. This oversight is holding the profession back from becoming mature and trusted! What is this important aspect? Ethics!Even though the profession should have taken more seriously the application of ethics to customer data, algorithms, and the rest before now, we need to apply ethical principles to everything we do immediately. This episode introduces the notion of Ethics, its application to the data profession, a couple case studies, and then a challenge for the listeners! • 23. (Data Bites) Immersive Digital Literacy Education Combats Definition Deadlock

    05/07/2019 Duración: 09min

In the previous episodes this week we learned that there are over 100 different definitions for "Digital Literacy". To make the situation worse, there are hundreds of different certificates available to show that you are, in fact, digitally literate. All of these certificates, and the many different definitions are likely in response to the importance of becoming digitally literate so that one can fully participate as a denizen of the 21st century. However, these many certificates and definitions appear to miss the mark in one way or another. Today's data bites suggests that we all take a page out of the strategies of learning new languages. That is, an immersive experience in various technologies will create an education experience without the need of committing to a particular definition of digital literacy. To keep up with the podcast be sure to visit our website at datacouture.org, follow us on twitter @datacouturepod, and on instagram @datacouturepodcast. • 22. (Data Bites) Topological Dangers of Defining Digital Literacy

    03/07/2019 Duración: 08min

On this episode of Data Bites we have a confession to make! That is, on Monday's episode we gave a definition of "Digital Literacy" that encompassed five subareas descriptive of the notion. The confession we need to make is that there are well over 100 different definitions of Digital Literacy, and there is no general consensus about the best one. On top of that, on Monday, we discussed the challenges of training generations that are not digital natives in the ways relevant to some notion of digital literacy. However, this discussion of education, while important, does not take into account nearly half the world that lacks even basic internet access. So, today's Data Bites presents the many topological challenges associated with the complex notion of Digital Literacy and asks the question whether this notion is really the hallmark of citizenship in the 21st Century! To keep up with the podcast be sure to visit our website at datacouture.org, follow us on twitter @datacouturepod, and on instagram @datacoutu
