Not long after his dinner meeting with Roger Ackroyd the doctor receives a call from Roger Acroyd's butler (he believes) announcing that Mr. Ackroyd has been murdered- but when the doctor arrives at the house the butler swears it wasn't he who made the call. Ackroyd is indeed dead in his office, and soon the Inspector is doing the investigation and asking the questions. Suspects abound- but the butler is top on the Inspector's list.
