In Part 4 Smith becomes involved in the war against the Turks as Christians battle Turks in Hungary and Transylvania to regain their cities and land. His name is drawn and he faces a well-known Turkish knight  in a duel with lances on horseback. Later he falls in battle, is captured, and given to a Turkish princess as a slave. He finally escapes and heads back to England where he meets Gosnold and is invited to join an expedition to the New World. We then rejoin the Jamestown story at the point where Smith and a small contingent are sent to explore the upper reaches of the Chickahominy River-some of his men are killed- and he is taken captive.
