The Red Sox had opportunities at home at Fenway Wednesday night against the Oakland A's but came up short in losing, 5-2. Series is even at 1-1 with the finale Thursday night. Nick Pivetta, who struck out 8 straight batter at one point and finished with 10 strikeouts, allowed 4 earned runs and he was tagged with the loss. All 4 runs that the A's scored against Pivetta (3 in the 3rd and 1 in the 7th) came with 2 outs in the inning. Sox left the bases loaded in the 1st inning against winning pitcher JP Sears, who allowed a solo Home Run to Rob Refsnyder in the 6th inning and that was it over 5.2 innings of work. Red Sox had the bases loaded with 2 outs in the 7th and settled for only 1 run. Tyler O'Neill reached on an infield single that scored the runner from 3rd-base. Rafael Devers was next but he was retired on a fielder's choice groundout. Josh Winckowski gave up a run in the 8th on a sacrifice fly and that gave the A's a 3-run cushion.
