His first taste of showbiz came in 1948 when he was on "The Howdy Doody Show" in New York City (which featured a young Bob Keeshan as "Clarabell the Clown", who later became well know as "Captain Kangaroo"). In high school he formed his first band "The Pizzarinos" with Jerry Jeff Walker (known for writing "Mr. Bojangles" and others) and Larry Santos (writer of "Sherry" for the Four Seasons and commercial jingles "Folgers in your cup" and "All Aboard Amtrak").
