On November 9th, 1984, two horror cult classics opened up head to head, Wes Craven's Nightmare on Elm Street and the controversial Silent Night Deadly Night. After a bunch of sequels, one would think Freddie Krueger would have been the more successful, however, Silent Night Deadly Night beat it at the box office. But with its plot of a crazed killer dressed in a Santa Claus outfit, outrage by religious and parent groups caused a backlash. Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert even called it one of the most despicable films in history. Due to the uproar, the film was pulled from theaters, yet years later it has become one of the most beloved slasher films of all time.
