There are surprises every year in the world of cinema, you never quite know what's going to pan out and end up delivering the goods. A lot of things that sound good on paper end up being poor in execution, and vice versa. There's always the approach of relying on a filmmakers track record and having a reasonable amount of confidence in their next project, but even then there are disappointments and (usually) inevitable decline. There's the "brand loyalty" idea, where you stick with a franchise even though it starts SUCKING ASS, and in recent years no shortage of legacy sequels. Every year also brings it's share of unintentionally hilarious cinematic disasters.
