During the Hollywood Reporter’s roundtable for documentary filmmakers, the woman who made a doc about Frida Kahlo said, “There’s a whole universe of people who are incredibly invested in Frida. We heard from a few, making sure that we didn’t call her a “feminist,” because that word didn’t exist when Frida was alive.”I don’t doubt that a lot of people are invested in Frida Kahlo and I don’t doubt that her feminism is contentious – but “feminist” was absolutely a word in Frida’s lifetime. It had been for many years by the time she might claim or not claim it. It’s possible it was not yet popular in Mexico but at least here in the states it was well known enough to appear in newspapers as early as the 1910s. They dedicated a lot of space to the subject.
