Three distinct events between 1991 and 1993 have been credited with leading this new movement: the controversial testimony of Anita Hill against her former boss and supreme court nominee Clarence Thomas, an article by Rebecca Walters which covered that whole incident and a group of bad-ass women with instruments and a whole lot of anger trapped inside known as Riot Grrrls.
