Welcome back to Triple Feature, where we don’t do pious canonization or mindless culture war dunking—we do critical conversations. And tonight, we’re closing out Pride Month with a look at three biographical films that give us not only a window into LGBTQ history but also force us to confront the messy, complicated truth behind some of its most iconic figures: Milk (2008), Kinsey (2004), and Lizzy (2018). These are not feel-good hero narratives. Nor should they be. All three subjects—Harvey Milk, Alfred Kinsey, and Lizzie Borden—occupy liminal, even controversial, spaces in both queer history and American memory. And while these films do the Hollywood work of dramatizing personal struggle and cultural impact, what makes them worth watching—and discussing together—is that none of them give us easy protagonists. These are portraits of disruption, not sainthood.
