NAMI Minnesota volunteer Kim Sherva, photo by Ryan Coit NAMI Minnesota offers support groups for the LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer) community. The support groups are a safe place to confront the challenges that many members of LGBTQ communities face such as social isolation, stigma, discrimination, low self-esteem, anxiety and depression. Kim began volunteering with NAMI Minnesota in 2011 as a NAMI LGBTQ Connection peer support group facilitator, followed by becoming a trainer of new facilitators, and finally a presenter in the NAMI In Our Own Voice program through which people living with mental illnesses share their personal recovery stories.
