The Beatles, otherwise known as the first wave of The British Invasion, appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show at 8:00 PM, February 9, 1964, and the music world changed, especially for boomer males. Up until that point we had rock and roll, and doo-wop, and surf music was making the scene with Dick Dale and the Del-Tones, and The Beach Boys with the ever inventive Brian Wilson. Before that pop music was mostly hits from Broadway shows, lots of ballads with a gimmick song thrown in to enliven the mood. Yes, The Beatles were something rare and they defined that transition to the 1960s culture shift. Their music started arguments. Their haircuts started fights. The band was banned in certain cities and states. But they represented the change coming in America and not just in music. Ed Sullivan, a newspaper columnist, sports and entertainment reporter, and eventual TV personality, saw The Beatles in Heathrow Airport greeted by an enthusiastic crowd.
