Heena has  spent more than 20 years leading studies on HIV prevention studies in sub-Saharan Africa (Uganda, Tanzania, Botswana, Namibia and South Africa) and Asia (India, China and Pakistan) which included examining risk  factors for MTCT and child mortality; long-term trajectory of survival of infants born to HIV+ mothers; and co-infection of HIV and placental malaria on MTCT and birth outcomes.
