It’s much easier if you need to make a change to your itinerary and some low cost carriers like Southwest only offer direct sale. The most important thing when buying a cheap ticket is time.  When you buy your ticket, the time of year you’re planning to travel, and the days of the week you choose to fly on.  The best time to buy is on a Tuesday or Wednesday.  Those are also the best days to fly. Off season will always be cheaper. Orlando over a holiday will always be expensive. Flying to Europe in March is cheaper than flying in July.
