Rancher Maurice Buckland, along with his adult son Dave, are driving in their jeep checking their fences and dropping off salt cakes for their cattle. When they run across a group of men forcing some of their cattle into a truck, they confront the rustlers with a shotgun. The thieves shoot first, however, and then run for it. The elder Buckland is announced dead on arrival at the local hospital later that afternoon. Sheriff Clyde Johnson calls in the Texas Rangers to help track down the killers. The case is assigned to Jace Pearson.
