When Ed Shelby and Bob Gringle come across Charlie Drain camping on the prairie, they accuse him of being a horse thief and hang him. Back in Dodge City, Matt Dillon is confronted by a rancher named Charlie Drain who enraged by the crime. He promises Dillon he will take matters into his own hands if the marshall doesn't catch the murderers. When Drain accuses Gil Mather, a local rancher, the situation spirals out of control.
