The Avengers have traveled through time to pick up various Infinity Stones, and bungled an attempt to pick up the Tesseract (Space Stone). Instead, Loki seizes the opportunity and takes it, and disappears!!! This causes a nexus event in the timeline, because back in the original Avengers film, Loki is captured and taken back to Asgard by Thor. So in Loki TV series, we see where he reappears - in Mongolia where he is captured by the TVA - The Time Variance Authority which is a bureaucratic organization that exists outside of time and space and monitors the timeline.   They give Loki a choice
