The coffee industry is precarious. In the conventional coffee trading system, the middleman makes money, while coffee farmers fear for their existence all year round. They have to work long and hard every day and are most directly affected by factors such as economic instability, exploitation and the unpredictable effects of climate change. In addition, they have no choice but to live on loans and credits as they are paid only once a year after the harvest. Hilo is an alternative system to the conventional coffee trade.
