In early February 2015, the New York State attorney general's office accused GNC, Target, Walgreens, and Walmart of selling dietary supplements that contained none of the ingredients advertised on their labels. Rather, their pills and capsules contained a mixture of cheap fillers like powdered rice, asparagus, beans, carrots and houseplants. The state attorney general, Eric T. Schneiderman, sent all four of the national retailers a cease and desist order, and demanded they explain what procedures they use to verify the ingredients in their supplements.
