  • #060: Is Saint George Still a Saint? [Podcast]

    19/11/2014 Duración: 39min

My goal this week is to answer a question that I get pretty regularly: “Is Saint George still a saint?” Or “Is Saint Christopher still a saint?” Or “Is Saint Philomena still a saint?” As you know, these saints were removed from the liturgical calendar and so you quite often hear people claim that Saint George or Saint Christopher are no longer saints. We’re going to look at this question from a historical, liturgical and theological point of view. Oh, and don’t worry, I’ll definitely explain why George is depicted with a dragon and why would should take that seriously. So if you’ve wondered “What’s up that dragon?” this is the podcast for you. Click to Listen: #060: Is Saint George Still a Saint? (This podcast is out of order because I goofed and made two Episode 57’s! So this episode which was announced as 57, has been moved and renumbered as Episode 60. Sorry about the confusion.   If the audio player does not show up in your email or browser, please click here to listen.

  • #055: Why Do We Baptize Babies? The Covenantal Argument

    22/10/2014 Duración: 48min

My goal this week is to talk to you about infant baptism. If faith is something someone must know and understand and it must be a personal decision from the heart, why do we baptize children? They do not make a decision? Moreover, one might say that Catholicism has so many nominal members precisely because of infant baptism. Would it better to just wait till people mature and make the decision themselves? We will look at these common objections and then the biblical and historical reasons for baptizing infants. • Taylor’s Voicemail about St Augustine in 50 Pages

    01/09/2014 Duración: 02min

On my birthday, March 29, 2014, the email subscribers of my blog took a vote on our next free book. I offered several free books I’d be willing to write for you as a “thank you” for your encouragement. The winning title was Augustine in 50 Pages: A Quick Layman’s Guide to Augustinianism. You can see the various book options and how the voting broke down by clicking here. My goal was to finish researching and writing the book by the feast day of Saint Augustine on August 28, 2014. 27/08/2014 Duración: 38min

My goal this week is to talk about ‘cleaning the inside of the cup.’ I’m going to talk about my own struggles with hypocrisy and how I’m trying to overcome it. In Matthew chapter 23, our Lord Jesus Christ warns the Pharisees about cleaning the outside of the cup, but not the inside. He also warns us about not swallowing the camel. We’ll look at these passages and try to see what Christ is teaching us. 06/08/2014 Duración: 41min

My goal this week is to take a look at the Evangelical Protestant teaching “once saved always saved.” Once upon a time when I was an Evangelical, I believed in this teaching. It basically holds that once you have accepted Jesus as your personal Lord and Savior, you can do nothing to lose it. Catholic Christians don’t believe this. So today we will look at the key Bible verses related to this teaching. It’s going to be fun! • Video: Eve - Is Woman a Misbegotten Male? (Thomas Aquinas vs. Aristotle)

    08/07/2014 Duración: 16min

This is going to be controversial! Today we look at the classical and medieval understandings of woman as she relates to man. We do so by looking at the Genesis account and along the way we get into some dicey theology. If you’re a rock-ribbed feminist, you may want to stop reading here. Just sayin’. Thomas Aquinas locks horns with Aristotle on this issue of “woman as misbegotten male.” I think you’ll find this video especially interesting and helpful as you engage with others who argue that “The story of Adam and Eve is misogynistic!” You’ll also learn about Thomas Aquinas’ philosophy. As always, I look forward to the comments!!! By the way this video is the last of a series of NSTI videos that we’ve been releasing for the past two weeks from the New Saint Thomas Institute.
