Best Friend Weekend Podcast

Donald Trump started it, so we had to discuss it. We started this week’s pod with the rationale behind us calling Donald Trump the “Great Unifier”, which was completely tongue-in-cheek (03:00). We continued this conversation and debated if it is appropriate to sit or kneel during the national anthem (12:00), tried to understand what people are really upset about (20:00), and hypothesized if we would kneel or not (26:00). To be truly inclusive, we examined the other side of the protest and tried to comprehend how the flag lovers feel (33:00) with Aldo presenting an analogy that might help black people realize the disconnect (39:00). Ray Lewis was definitely a topic of discussion (45:00) leading into more Trump talk (50:00), and a nod to Maliah Michael (52:00). After Nothing NICE To Say (57:00), the podcast ended with the president’s tweet about uninviting the Golden State Warriors to the White House (1:00:00).

At the end of the last pod, we said that somebody would do something wild that we would end up talking about… Kevin Hart is the gift that keeps on giving! In this episode, aptly titled “HARTless”, we quickly rapped about some recent cotton controversies at Hobby Lobby and Lipscomb University (03:00). Then we shifted gears to talk about Jemele Hill and ESPN (11:00), was she wrong and should she have been fired (20:00), and the ramifications of speaking your mind on social media at the job (33:00). The second half of the pod was almost totally dedicated to Kevin Hart (35:00), his latest cheating allegations, extortion attempts, moral dilemmas, and some different opinions out there (48:00). After Nothin’ NICE to Say, we concluded by discussing JAY-Z and the SuperBowl… #RealOrFakeNews (1:02:00).

With the NFL season kicking off, we decided to dedicate an episode to America's favorite and most controversial pastime, football. The elephant in the room was should we be watching the NFL or boycotting in support of Colin Kaepernick (01:00). After this short debate, we revisited Michael Bennett’s incident in Las Vegas (09:00), its fallout, and if the Bennett brothers or Meek Mill give more money to their mother (26:00). We then did a word association game where we said which word comes to mind when we name various NFL players like Russell Wilson, Cam Newton, Odell Beckham, etc (33:00). The podcast ended with a discussion about DACA (58:00) and the unveiling of Aldo’s new podcast short, Nothing NICE To Say (1:08:00).

Hurricane Harvey left us without recording equipment for the last 2 weeks, but we are back with one of the most entertaining podcasts in a while! Aldo NICE and Rog Smuve linked up with C.A.P. to discuss the Harvey aftermath in the city of Houston and how #FakeNews is killing the internet in 2017. After exchanging open statements, the guys discuss the origins of Fake News and how Donald Trump made this a thing (06:00). Aldo presents 10 "news stories" that hit the internet during the storm and asked Rog and C.A.P. to decide which are real stories and which are fake. In one of the most heated podcasts to date, Rog Smuve returned to discuss the recent racially charged events in Charlottesville, Virginia from conservative and liberal perspectives. We began by explaining the protest and the aftermath (03:00) which brought us a conversation about the meaning of imagery, especially flags (16:00), statues (20:00), and schools (27:00) that bear the name/likeness of Confederate soldiers. We played a snippet from the presidents' response and dedicated some time to our feelings about Donald Trump (32:00). Labeling this the "Decade of Protest" (41:00), we discussed white-on-white crime (46:00), the outrage of "auctions" in today's society (52:00), and where to draw the line on things that are deemed "racist" (57:00).

In the first installment of Educated Ignorance, Aldo NICE sat down with our homeboy Los to chop it up about recent social events and what really happens in the world of teachers. The guys dove right into Usher and his grand fetish (05:00), the difference between teachers sleeping with kids in the 90's (07:00) and the same act nowadays (11:00), if all fetishes are okay (16:00) and if Usher actually slept with his BBW accuser (25:00). For the first time ever, we decided to do an interview on the BFW Podcast. We were able to get Scottie D, one of Houston's most renowned event promoters, to sit down and discuss the subtle differences between "black clubs" and "white clubs." We had a chance to ask why club promoters only seem to exist at black clubs (09:00), what's up with the phenomenon of "holding the line" (12:00), why black clubs seem to have cover charges and white clubs do not (17:00), what's up with the lack of diversity in black clubs (23:00), and what's the low down on celebrity club hosts (31:00). The last part of the pod was solely centered around Lil Duval's recent comments about transsexuals with some interesting "what would you do" type questions(38:00).

Back in our respective cities, we chose to dive into the intersection of race, the justice system, sports, and pop culture in the week that was. We began with our takes on the Pied Piper of R&B, R.Kelly, and his "sex cult" (03:00), discussed who is the better artist, him or Usher (16:00), touched on Usher Raymond's legal woes and risky sex (19:00), gave our two cents on the Colin Kaepernick vs. Michael Vick debate (25:00), rehashed a conversation about OJ Simpson, the 1995 trial, and its implications today (39:00), laughed at Hugh Freeze and his BackPage addiction (56:00), and provided the low down on Kevin Hart's bad decision (1:06:00).

With Aldo NICE in town, the #BestFriendWeekend was recorded LIVE in Denver, CO. Since we were in the Mile High City, it was only right to discuss good and bad highs and why we proceed with caution when it comes to weed (02:00). Next we chose a few albums that would sum up the music industry for the last 20 years for Pac and Biggie (15:00). We took a little time to discuss our thoughts on Mayweather/McGregor (26:00), our opinion of our favorite Make-A-Wish kid, Lil Jarrius, and if he’s doing too much (34:00), and our take on Lonzo Ball’s latest shoe controversy (47:00). We finished the pod with a nod to our new favorite basketball player, James Harden (52:00).

We got back to basics this week with our favorite topics; race and hip-hop. We started with a brief conversation about Kodak Black's latest controversial statements (03:00) which got us off on another tangent about skin tone and females (08:00), the Land of the Mythical Creatures, and the downfall of the light-skins (10:00). Some brief Blac Chyna and Kardashian talk (23:00) spilled over into us taking stock of who has more juice, Kimye or Bey/Jay (30:00). The last part of the pod was dedicated to JAY-Z (37:00), our thoughts on streaming music and Tidal (42:00), small vs. big black businesses (45:00), and four big takeaways from the 4:44 album (53:00).

The return of Rog Smuve had us using this weeks’ show to talk beef in the hip-hop community… We started off with a discussion about the 2017 BET Awards (05:00), had some brief convo about Pride Weekend (07:00), touched on the recent hip-hop mini-beef sessions between Meek Mill/Safari (12:00) and Migos/JoeBudden (22:00), pitched a 2017 Def Jam Vendetta video game (36:00), got into a some local news highlighting inequities in news conference for certain crimes (41:00), and opened the door for a future conversation about rape culture (50:00).
