In October 2010, I was battling for a starting position for Missouri State University. My position, second base, was taken by an All-American. Our head coach sent me to learn right field where I've never played.  Why was I in this situation? Because Missouri State and playing for Coach Guttin was one of my primary goals coming out of high school. I was on a mission.  There was no plan B.  As we headed into the final day of the fall, Coach Guttin called me into his office and explained my situation. It was an "end-game" type of moment where he gave me an ultimatum heading into our winter training.  The pressure built to an all-time level for me with my scholarship money, potential pro-career, representing my high school, parents, and friends, we're all in jeopardy. You ask, "Is that a rule?" They respond, "Well, it's an unwritten rule. It's the etiquette of the game, and it's a respectful thing to the other players." Some players are proactive and don't wait for directions. They need advice, but it's advice that will further advance their thinking. The top 1% of professionals in their respective fields have this trait.  A real high performer looks to build their career at any means possible, AND they will not wait for the opportunity to approach them. They take the opportunity given to them but also look for it.  Indecision is the thief of opportunity; inability to choose how to construct your day, unwillingness to see past your current goals to make bodacious ones, and forgoing expert advice to multiply it in your skills. Do you remember in grade school when the teacher played the game telephone? Everyone gets in a line, and the teacher tells a short story. It's usually 1-2 sentences long. As your classmates relay the message, you wonder what it's going to be. You see people smiling, giggling, and it's finally your turn.  When you hear it, you look confused....is this what Ms. Deplanty said?!?  As you take a deep breath as everyone's staring at you, the teacher asks, "What was the story?" "The banana went to a donut shop. He asked for a cup of coffee with his creme. His name was Larry."  "Rumor has it." is the game of telephone in real life. We get sucked into these stories that have characters, situations, and objects mixed-up. When we hear the story, we quickly accept it at face value. Price wars are when multiple players in a space compete against one another in hopes to attract more customers by providing the cheapest price in the market. It's a slippery slope as purchasing brings about price changes until the competition is priced out of the market. Status wars have the same slippery slope. How do you win? What's the better route? First impressions are not easy, but what's even harder are the tough conversations. The similarities between first impressions and tough conversations is understanding the other persons point of view. Without being a cliche and just blurting out, "IT'S EMPATHY!" We're going to navigate our original struggles with starting  the unpleasant conversations and how respect plays a huge factor while delivering an uneasy conversation about playing time or being cut.
