The fact that it was thrown by one of it's own is unbelievable. I'm a 43 year old man from Raleigh. If someone had asked me if this was possible when I was 16, I would've responded with a resounding hell no! But here we are. And it's amazing. We talked about it all on this ep. Imagine Hip Hop without sampling; without the loop from Chic's "Good Times" as the soundscape to "Rapper's Delight". I don't know about you, but my mind can't even work out or imagine those thoughts. Artists and producers have been sued, criticized and ridiculed for sampling; mostly by people that don't understand or are not of the culture. However, even inside the culture of Hip Hop there are differences of opinion on sampling and its validity. For example, there are those of us that reward the Just Blazes of the world and shame the Puff Daddys. Aren't they both sampling? So what makes a Hip Hop purist look at them differently? Maybe it's not that they sample but HOW they do it. There are tons of hairs to split on this topic and we take aim at them all. This show gets deep. Deep as the mind of the abyss. If you're of a certain age and/or era it's hard to imagine Hip Hop without sports. There's a clear demarkation in time where Hip Hop and sports became inseparable to the visible public. In this episode we stumble on a deeper relationship between the two. 2Chainz "hiring" Lebron James to A&R his latest project, Rap Or Go To The League, coupled with an ESPN press run spawned a long overdue conversation. We started with Chainz but of course we broadened the topic to the relationship between sports and Hip Hop overall and over time. There's SO MUCH in this episode. The award still holds just as much weight today as it did 40 or 50 years ago. And because the Grammys matter we must discuss the winners and losers. This year was interesting for a lot of reasons. Chance the Rapper, Russ, Young Dolph, Blueface...What do these rappers have in common? Each of them has been rumored to be an Industry Plant. Exactly what IS an Industry Plant you might ask. Well no one knows exactly but on this episode we OUR definition. We also speak about the false narrative of independence of the young artist. Our belief is it all created by the record labels. Rap battles sure have changed! Tory challenged everyone in Hip Hop to a battle and a few New York emcees accepted the challenge. Mysonne, J.R. Writer and yes, Don Q. Not particularly the line up we might've expected but it is what it is. From all of this we got at least one official squabble. Tory and Don Q had a pretty intense back and forth; especially because their "friends". Like I said, rap battles sure have changed...It's us. So you can guarantee this lead to a more global Hip Hop conversation. We take some time to discuss the components of the battle nowadays. It's hilariously different than a rap battle in 2000 or 1990. With that being said, one thing we're happy still exist in these battles are BARS. No we're not in the era of Jadakiss and Styles going at Beanie Sigel.  But hey! A few weeks ago, J. Cole sent out a "Golden Ticket" to what seemed like the entire music industry. Those who got a ticket were invited to TreeSound Studio in Atlanta to take part in the recording sessions for Revenge of The Dreamers 3. With a reported 90+ artists, producers, engineers and media flowing through the studio, over 10 days, expectations are through the roof. Oh to have been a fly of the wall!?!? This is the greatest gathering of talent for recording purposed since My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy; at least to my feeble memory lol. And it's definitely the largest "industry event" so far in 2019. Which makes this more than worthy of a #CFAF conversation. At its core, this conversation is about the authenticity of Hip Hop; or lack thereof. We're decades into the genre we all love and I'd bet good money none of you could name 5 known gay rappers.
