But it is also the day that we celebrate the truth that because of what Jesus did on the cross, we are now a part of a NEW and much better covenant. Certain words and ideas can elicit very strong reactions. Few can compare to the reaction of hearing words like; authority, submission, and headship. Yet these are ideas and concepts that are designed by God, and therefore are good. We need to separate what God is telling us been poorly taught. As children of God, we are called saints. That describes both our nature as well as our calling. It is a calling that is not to conform ourselves to the way the world thinks and operates, but a call to be different. To live as God calls us. What we do with our hurts and wounds will determine the degree of freedom we will experience. If we decide that we never will allow anyone to ever hurt us again, we retreat into a 'panic room' of sorts within our selves. This form of self-protection will provide some protection from the abuse of others - but it will also keep love and life out as well. Guaranteeing that our wounds and hurts, which are locked up with us in our panic room, will only get worse. As we close out 2020, it is natural to reflect on how difficult a year it has been, and hope that next year will be better. But what if next year is not better? What if next year is more of the same, or even worse? Where do we find the hope to continue? We look to those who have gone before us for their wisdom. Particularly, David in Psalm 31 where he writes about his distress, loneliness, and struggles and how he placed his hope in God as an answer.
