Crank Sturgeon proposed a discussion on contact microphones, so in this episode we go over what a contact mic is, general applications, how to record and affix the mics and amplifying slightly more traditional instruments, why the contact microphone is the perfect noise instrument, contact mics vs other microphones, in the studio and in the field, using with synthesizers and modular, troubleshooting contact mic issues, and plenty of Cranky anecdotes!

JG Thirlwell was cool enough to to sit down with us for a deep look into his world of sound. Thirlwell has worked with everyone form Steven Stapleton and Coil to scoring "The Venture Brothers" and "Archer" television shows, not to mention his own hefty discography as Foetus, Steroid Maximus, Xordox and so much more. It was incredible to hear stories from his entire history as well as what’s being planned for the future. Prepare to enter Pigdom Come.

Our yearly Marco Corbelli episode has arrived and this time we went for something a little different — Morder Machine “DeathShow.” A project that existed directly alongside Atrax Morgue, Morder Machine utilized a bit more structure and rhythm without losing any darkness and obsession. We pull quotes directly about Morder Machine and relay Marco’s thoughts on the project. Zoe DeWitt is a bona fide legend of industrial culture and ritual underground. We were thrilled for Zoe to sit down with us to discuss the entire history of Nekrofile Records and her projects Korpses Katatonik and Zero Kama. We get into many aspects of her work, from musical output to fashioning instruments out of human bones to her work within the occult and much more.

Shane English returns and brings us a tape from his deep cassette culture collection perfect for autumn days — Randy Greif's "Golden Joy Club." We go to abstract realms of mid 80s industrial sound with this very cool artifact on Greif’s own Swinging Axe label. Revel in the doorway of sleep go towards heaven's hole.

We took a Noisextra field trip to the Vintage Synthesizer Museum in Los Angeles and sat down with owner Lance Hill. He tells us how the museum got started, what his vision for it is, how the move to LA has gone and much more. It’s a very cool spot and resource and was a great podcast excursion.

Bill Orcutt of Harry Pussy joins us today for a great historical discussion on a different branch of noise. In the 90s along with bands like To Live and Shave in LA and Laundry Room Squelchers, Harry Pussy tore apart all semblance of good taste and set proper foundations ablaze. Miami in the '90s was a wild place and Orcutt was right in the middle. We also get into his return to sound and his current work. What was music?

In the second part of our talk with John Duncan, we get into his time in Amsterdam up to his current work. Greh and John reminisce about the “Voice Contact” performance that Greh participated in. In addition, John talks about ideas and process behind “The Crackling,” “Nazca Tranmissions,” and much more. We can’t thank John enough for taking time to let us in on his history and art.

In the first of two episodes, John Duncan sat down with us for a riveting conversation about his early days in Los Angeles to his mid-80s period living in Japan. We discuss multiple events and works staged in both locations, from Scare to Radio Code to his work in pornography and much more. Sean Ragon (Cult of Youth) was the perfect person to join us to uncover the classic Metgumbnerbone “Ligeliahorn” LP on A-Mission Records from 1983. A truly mysterious project, Metgumbnerbone creates their own world and we are all more than happy to walk around the industrial ruins and abandoned mills where the recordings were made. This album is a staple for post-industrial and is cloaked in a fantastic mythology ripe for discovery.

Jim O’Rourke takes a journey through his deep history with us and we were absolutely thrilled. We get into 1980s Chicago, setting up shows for Merzbow and Zoviet France, the cassette culture network, working and living in Europe with John Duncan and Christoph Heemann, and so much more. Jim has more stories than most people have had days, so sit back for a first hand historical account of the underground world. The hot Satanic summer sun is burning our bodies and Archon Satani knows this feeling and creates the soundtrack with "The Righteous Way to Completion." Releases on Cold Spring in 1997, this was the final album for the project. It’s a dark ambient staple and one that stokes Satan’s fires during the hottest of seasons. It's time another "roots of noise" episode as we went to Mitchell Brown’s (Gasp, Points of Friction) place to learn more about the world of "incredibly strange records" from the 50s and 60s. From delay drenched novelty records to recordings of earthquakes to recordings of insects to equipment test records, Mitchell is an expert in this arena. For this one, we play some examples of these records and react to them in the moment. Make sure your stereo is calibrated and dig in.

Christian Fennesz joins us today for a fantastic discussion. It’s the 25th anniversary of his first album "Hotel Paral.lel" so we take a look back at those early days, from meeting Peter Rehberg and how radical using a computer was, to his recent work and what it’s like being back in a bedroom studio. We were very grateful to get to talk to Fennesz and get a perspective from one of the stalwarts of Mego and 90s experimental computer sound.

With the return of the Self Abuse Murder Series, we wanted to put up one of our Patreon episodes on the original Murder Series over here on the regular feed. March to 1980s Soviet Russia with this month's Case History as Skin Crime tackles the werewolf-like existence of Andrei Chikatilo on the "Monster" 7". We get into the life of the Butcher of Rostov and how perfectly the noise relates to his murders. Stay away from train stations and woods, but keep this 7" close. You never know who you will run into.

Bob Scott, the mastermind behind Xome, took time to sit down with us to discuss his many decades in the noise world. From living in Japan in the 90s to tricking Mike into thinking he saw him play in 1999, this was a super fun and informative talk. Xome is one of the greats that is still going to this day, so fill up a jar with mud and put this one on at your next party.
