The culture is changing and is becoming more and more against Christian values. There are those who say that if our Christian values don’t comply and become supportive of the cultural mandates, we will be seen as combatants in our society. The pressure will increase until we give in … we have seen that reality happen with the homosexual revolution. Christians now are slowly accepting the homosexual lifestyle as acceptable to God. What a lie! What a crime against the truth of God’s Word!We are called to love everyone, to forgive everyone, and to tell the truth to everyone. Loving and forgiving is what we do fairly well in the church, but we are lacking in telling the truth. Policing like so many areas of authority in our society have been under attack for some time, and it continues to be in the news. For example, the trial of Derek Chavin accused of killing George Floyd. Chavin was convicted of three counts of murder. Most people following this case felt justice was served in the jury’s decision to convict. I am not here to debate the verdict, it was decided by a jury and that settles it for me. However, I am concerned about the nature of policing our cities moving forward. Belshazzar, the last king of Babylon learned a very swift and harsh lesson about messin' with God's treasures. You see, he took the Temple treasures his ancestor, Nebuchadnezzar, captured from the Jews' Jerusalem Temple in 586 BC and used them for a drinking party in honor of Babylon's gods. As he did so he mocked Israel's God. BIG MISTAKE! God's hand appeared and wrote out his judgment … death, Babylon's judgment, overthrown … which was carried out that very night. Here's the point. When I became a Christian back in the early 1970’s there was a movement known as the Jesus People Revival, and these were primarily people coming out from the hippie movement of that era. Churches were not ready for the long hair and barefoot new converts coming to Christ. In time, churches either adapted to these new hippie believers or new churches sprang up to accommodate them. Today, we do better at accepting people into our churches, but I’m not sure we are challenging them to be the kind of followers Jesus is looking for in order to fulfill the Great Commission. There have been many movements in the church since I started my career in ministry. We’ve had the Prosperity Movement, the Jabez Prayer Movement, the Dominion Movement, the Seeker Sensitive Movement and on and on. Now, we have the Red Letter Christian Movement. This separates the Words of Jesus from the rest of Scripture and prioritizes them as more important than the rest of the Bible. Of course, we all know the Bible is the Word of God from Genesis to Revelation, so this movement seems out of step with the whole revelation of God found in the Scriptures.
