He was the rising star who walked away from the spotlight. Jason Kander was running to be Kansas City's next mayor and there were whispers of a presidential run in 2020. That's when he decided to drop out of the race and confront PTSD and depression from his service in Afghanistan as an Army Intelligence Officer. Almost a year later, the former Missouri Secretary of State is back in the public eye with a new mission at the Veterans Community Project. Friday, July 17th, 1981 is a night Kansas City won't forget. Tea dances at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Crown Center had become popular weekly summer events. It's why KMBC's Micheal Mahoney was there covering the event for a feature story. But just after 7pm that night, two skywalks collapsed, killing more than 100 people and injuring dozens more. In this episode you'll hear from a KC native who lost his mom and stepfather in the disaster. Major earthquakes in California have turned our attention to a fault line running right through Missouri and underneath the Mississippi River. It's been 200 years since the New Madrid fault set off a catastrophic earthquake, but experts say that only means the next "big one" is coming and they don't know when. We called in one of Missouri's experts on earthquakes to tell us why we should be ready for what's to come.
