The boys, as one would expect, are looking at the more contentious aspects of this time of year. For Paul's pick, he went quite literal in the war department: Invasion U.S.A. (1985). Yes, it's good, old Chuck Norris and Cannon Films. This movie has everything: the worst performances ever seen on film, threadbare story, reactionary politics, denim-on-denim. The boys also take the opportunity to turn this episode into a backdoor review of the 2014 documentary, Electric Boogaloo: The Wild, Untold Story of Cannon Films. This Month's Theme: WAR! Screenplays! Plays adapted into film - a genre that people seem to love or hate. This week, Corey chose the PACCTS ur-text, The Odd Couple (1968). Neil Simon’s influence in American comedy cannot be overstated. Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau’s performances are inspired. Even 52 years later, this film is laugh-out-loud funny.

Screenplays! Plays adapted into film - a genre that people seem to love or hate. This week, Paul chose what Corey called "The best-written film we've watched yet," and it's absolutely true. A Raisin in the Sun (1961) written by Lorraine Hansberry. The film is packed with incredible performances from every single actor. Hansberry's life, art, and activism are awe-inspiring - taken too soon by cancer. This episode covers it all.

We're "At the Beach!" in August. Waves, sand, Olivia Newton John on the transistor radio. AND SUDDEN DEATH! Paul picked Jaws (1975). The film that changed everything. Corey chose Noah Baumbach's The Squid and the Whale (2005). A film that made a big impact on Paul when it came out, sartorially and musically, he was sure Corey would hate it. He didn't! Paul is like a kid in a candy store. And this week, he chose the film, I Am Not a Witch (2017). The first feature film written and directed by Zambian-Welsh director Rungano Nyoni. The story follows a 9-year-old orphaned girl named Shula as she is accused of being a witch. The film combines whimsy, absurdist humor, beautiful cinematography, brilliant performances, and nuanced discussions of neo-imperialism and feminism. This Month's Theme: Criterion!
