Running Backs This group of running backs is unique to previous years. After the top 5-6, there is a really big drop-off. This isn’t a class where you are going to be able to get a guy in the middle rounds who can come in and play right away. If you want one, you will have to spend a late first/early second-round pick. When I scout running backs, I prioritize three main elements: vision, burst, and contact balance. I can live without a running back having true home run deep speed if he can burst through the hole and get a large gain. To me, that’s more important because it affects the team on every down rather than just one or two plays a game. In this episode Tyler breaks down the top 5 edge prospects for the draft and the likelihood that the Vikings would take one is high. Edge There are numerous ways to classify pass rushers. You can group them as 4-3 DE or 3-4 OLB, but I group them under one category: EDGE. This group is really unique in that there isn’t a true alpha like Nick Bosa or Myles Garrett. What this group does have is depth. There are 11 players on my board with a grade above day 3 which is excellent depth.  When I grade edge rushers, I mainly focus on how they win. Do they win with speed? Power? Technique? Once they get beaten, how do they evolve their pass rush plan? Are they versatile, meaning can they work inside and out? What positions do they work best from? I have a preference for long athletes who can win with power and speed. Interior Offensive Linemen This year’s class of interior offensive lineman is full of variety. From guys with brute power to hyper-quick athletes, it has something for every offense. When I grade, I always grade a player at the position I think they will excel best at in the NFL, so you will see some guys on my list that others will have graded as tackles. With interior offensive linemen, I grade them very similar to how I grade the tackles: I look for how you win and how you lose. While my scale is technically the same, I value winning against power and establishing your anchor more on the interior than I do with tackles. Even though guards don’t matter, you still need good ones on your team. With upwards of 8 different players that could go round one along with being able to find guys in round 3 who could start day one. This is a great year to need a tackle.  When it comes to evaluating tackles, there is a lot that goes into it. I focus on two main things and break it down from there: how do they win and how do they lose. How you answer both of those questions gives you the full spectrum of a prospect. It also matters to me how quickly they win or lose because it can affect numerous other things during the course of a play. Wide Receivers After seeing historic classes last year and in 2015, this year is poised to be even more so. We are looking at potentially 6 wide receivers going on day one and upwards of 20 (through 2 days) and 40 (all 3 days) being drafted. Not only is there excellent depth and elite-level talent at the top, but there is a wide variety of styles to fit any offense. When I grade wide receivers, I value two things above all else: route running and separation. If you can break away from the defender, it makes everything that much easier for you and the quarterback. This was one fun quarterback class. While the top 5 is where almost all the talent is, there are a couple of guys underneath worth developing. We have been spoiled over the past few years with how many quarterbacks have been worthy of a top 15 selection and this year is even more so with 5 guys likely taken in that range.  Listen and find out who of these 10 QBs made the top 5: Trevor Lawrence, Justin Fields, Trey Lance, Zach Wilson, Mac Jones, Jamie Newman, Kyle Trask, Kellen Mond, Davis Mills, Shane Buechele Everybody has different characteristics that they value and I am no different. Ball placement and accuracy are what I value the most with 30% of my grading scale being geared directly towards that. I believe that these traits are more valuable than arm strength. It doesn’t matter a whole lot if the ball gets there when the pass is uncatchable.
