God continues to show his mercy and desire for obedience   God showed his mercy  In Egypt  In the wilderness With the next generation  They still disobeyed so he gave his consequence --that would not lead to life. They would pollute themselves and sacrifice their children so that they might be devasted and be reminded that he alone is the Lord. God desired obedience. He said that obedience would have given them life.  They kept reattaching themselves to idols. Who or what are you attaching yourself to?
