Monday of the Third Week of Easter Saint of the Day: St. Alphege of Canterbury, 954-1012; as bishop of Winchester, England, he was so generous to the poor that no beggars were to be found in his diocese; as archbishop of Canterbury, he offered himself to invading Danes in the place of his own people, and he was placed in a dungeon; freed after an epidemic among the Danes, he was later stoned and axed to death in Greenwich Office of Readings and Morning Prayer for 4/19/21 Gospel: John 6:22-29
