Two of the four gospels, Mathew and Luke, start with the account of Jesus birth.– Mark starts with the ministry of Jesus. But what about John’s Gospel? He starts way before the birth of Jesus – back to the beginning – the beginning of time itself, when the world was created. His opening statement is: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word WAS God.” Then in vs.14 John says: ‘And The Word became Human and lived with us…’ This is the beginning of the Christmas story! Jesus is called ‘The Word - Logos' - The principle of divine reason and creative order. He could have been called ‘The Thought - alogismos’ or ‘The Act - poeisis’, or ‘The Feeling - Pathos’. But these would not have had the same clarity as ‘The Word’. ‘The Thought’ could have left us still wondering what the thought was, just as would ‘The Feeling’.
