Why was Christ Baptized if He had no sin? Dr. Taylor Marshall explains why Christ was baptized and prepared the waters for all future baptisms. We may find it perplexing that Christ began his public ministry with a ceremonial washing administered by John the Baptist. Even though Christ was without sin, he still received this Jewish tevilah (tevilah = Jewish ceremonial water ritual) in order “to fulfill all righteousness” (Mt 3:15). Saint Ignatius of Antioch (writing before A.D. 108) said that Christ was baptized not so that the water should purify Him, but rather “that He might purify the water,” so that others might be saved through baptism.
