Immediately after the massacre of Karbalaa and also as a reaction to Yazeed's order to attack the Holy City of Al-Madeenah, the Makkans delared Hadrat Abdullah ibn Zubayr (ra) as the legitimate Caliph and soon the whole of the Hijaaz followed suit.
