Chickenpox or varicella is a viral infection that traditionally affects young children causing red itchy blisters to break out all over the body. The virus is extremely contagious. Prior to the availability of a vaccine there were approximately four million cases in the US every year which resulted in roughly 10,000 hospitalizations and over 100 deaths. The varicella vaccine was licensed in the US in the mid nineties and since then number of infections has plummeted.
