Rheumatoid Arthritis, or RA, is a form of inflammatory arthritis and an autoimmune disease. It affects about 1.3 million people in the U.S., and there are three times as many women as men with the disease. For reasons no one fully understands, in RA the immune system – which is supposed to protect our health by attacking foreign cells like bacteria and viruses – instead attacks the body’s own tissues, specifically the membrane that lines our joints.
