May is national Lyme disease awareness month, and today I wanted to take the opportunity to tell you a little about the disease. Lyme disease is a bacterial infection transmitted to humans by the bite of infected blacklegged ticks. Initial symptoms include fever, headache, fatigue, and a characteristic skin rash called erythema migrans. If left untreated, infection can cause arthritis, numbness, facial paralysis, and heart arrhythmias. Consequently prevention, early detection, and treatment are key.
