Maybe they even continued by telling you about all the problems that are going on in their life.  Problems are a part of life.   I understand that the only people that don’t have problems are buried in a cemetery.  I have been around long enough to understand that when people develop a mentality of simply “living under the circumstances”, they are robbing themselves of victories that could become theirs.
