She earned a Master of Arts in Science and Religion from Biola University and a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Campbell University. She is currently pursuing a PhD in humanities, her research focusing on the history and philosophy of science and the historical interaction of science and theology. Melissa worked in biotechnology and pharmaceutical research for five years after obtaining her undergraduate degree, and has spent more than a decade studying the science, theology, and philosophy pertaining to the origins debate.
