St. Paul would have Christians take comfort in the true teaching concerning the Last Day when Christ returns. The Thessalonians had been shaken and alarmed by false teaching that had surfaced among them. Paul reminds them of the truth that he had taught them while he was among them. Jesus had not yet returned in some invisible, spiritual way. That Day was still coming. In the time leading up to that Day, Christians would apostatize from the faith and be deceived by the man of lawlessness.
