What are some of the characteristics of Catholic interpretations of the Bible? In this episode we briefly discuss the phenomenon of balancing tensions. One of the hallmark characteristics of Catholic theology is its attempt to balance tensions. This approach can be best summarized in the phrase “both and”. One of the salient characteristics of the ways in which Catholic interpreters have approached the text of Scripture is an attempt to integrate seemingly opposing ideas. Hence, our description of this approach as balancing the tensions. This tension balancing can be seen, for example, in the ways in which Augustine handled the question of salvation by faith and works. Rather than opt for salvation by faith alone or salvation by works alone, Augustine throughout his life tried to balance the tension of affirming salvation by faith and salvation by good works.
